mimosa hostilis
Jurema has the ability to make profound changes in our life. Its spirit allows for ancient rooted wisdom discoveries which are based on integrity that aligns with deep knowledge about expanded states of consciousness.
The spirit of the Jurema Preta inhabits a plant that is known among various indigenous tribes to perform powerful ceremonies. It is housed by a shrubby or perennial tree belonging to the Fabaceae family of the Fabales order, typical of the caatinga. It is found in El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Colombia, and Venezuela reaching all the way into the northeastern Brazil. Hence it thrives in tropical deciduous forests as an opportunist, a pioneer plant and a resilient survivor that propagates easily, especially from seeds.
It is a deciduous species that flowers and bears fruit in the relatively driest period of the year, when it has no foliage. One of the trademarks is its beautiful flowers that flutter like white feathers in the wind which can create a real spectacle for the visual senses.
Other common names are Jurema Preta, Jurema Negra, Ajucá and Espineiro in the Portuguese language. Jurema commonly refers scientifically to Mimosa tenuiflora, also widely known as Mimosa hostilis. However, in Brazil, not to be confused, Jurema encompasses a group of “sensitive” plants in the Mimosoidae subfamily. Similarly, Mimosa ophthalmocentra, which is also rich in tryptamines, is known as Red Jurema (Jurema embira) while Mimosa verrucosa (Jurema branca), being a Pithecellobium diversifolium, together with Jurema de Oleiras refer to the less common White Jurema. While Mimosa verrucosa has pink flowers, Mimosa hostilis never has yellow or pink flowers.
In Mexico, Mimosa tenuiflora is known since the time of the Maya as Tepezcohuite or Tepescohuite which today refers to “tree of the skin”. Evidence of its use dates back all the way to the Maya civilization, demonstrating its historical importance. According to Cabrera’s Dictionary of Aztecisms (1975), the word Tepezcohuite comes from the Nahuatl words tepetl (Hill) and cuahuitl (Tree), “tree of the hill.” In addition, it is called tepuscuahuitl which means “iron or metal tree” alluding to the hardness of its wood, besides the names cabrero, charcoal and carbonal. The bark of the trunk is sold in the markets of Mexico for its applications in popular medicine.
Similarly the indigenous people of Brazil who make “vinho da jurema” also use the bark of the root. It is the same part of the plant used in religious ceremonies because it contains a large amount of psychoactive substances from the tryptamine class such as DMT. The root bark contains between 0.25% to 4.5% DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine) of the dry weight. The bark of the trunk contains much lower levels of DMT, as do the leaves.
Even though it lacks substances that inhibit the human enzyme Mono Amino Oxidase (MAOIs), Jurema preta medicine causes extreme altered states of consciousness. It is assumed that Jurema must have some type of orally active tryptamine that is yet to be discovered.
The revered plant has a long history in being used in spiritual and shamanistic practices. The Alchemists harvest the root or stem bark and brew it over a long period. Its preparation usually involves macerating or infusing the leaves in water. Likewise the bark can be soaked in sugar cane alcohol to create a composition, resulting in a liquid used in rituals and ceremonies. In some Afro-Brazilian cults the brew is known as cauim. Depending on the region, its composition and the name varies, but black Jurema remains the most common ingredient.
It is widely used in Toré, a shamanistic practice of the Kariri Xocó ethnic group where it is a symbol of spiritual initiation.
The Fulni-ô tribe, hailing from the Pernambuco region in northeastern Brazil, holds a prominent place as the guardians of this medicine. They are especially known for their knowledge of the sacred Jurema plant in their culture. They often associated it with lucid dreaming, visionary states and spiritual exploration.
Similar to them, the Katukina consider Jurema good for opening vision, working with the 3rd eye, increasing lucid dreaming as well and supporting astral projection during sleep while using it as a visionary drink.
There are tribal communities that use Jurema to enter the world of the dead, while its effects were manifested mainly during ceremonies that preceded war expeditions. Jurema helped the tribe members stay awake all night before the fight and be connected to their healing visions. There are many sacred songs, seitis and Icarus that celebrate the power of Jurema.
But not only ancient tribes have experienced the profound abilities of this sacred plant teacher. In the 1990s, researchers specialized in psychoactive experiments created Juremahusca, a drink analogous to Ayahuasca composed of a mixture of Jurema and Syrian Rue seeds (Peganum harmala), native to North Africa.
Besides Jurema being the name of the “spirit inside” the divine tree being it's also the name of an indigenous cabocla, the daughter of Tupinambá, who both were very strong and striking. Jurema can moreover be found as an indigenous type village in the spirit realm that holds a place for souls after their passing over from the physical plane of existence.
Some users claim that the divine spirit of Jurema offers the power to listen with attention and care to our own feelings as well as those of our brothers and sisters. The medicine gives the opportunity to be more of who we are and help strengthen our communication with the spirits of nature together with bringing harmony into our world.
While Jurema is traditionally used for inducing visions and spiritual insights through a brew, it is also shared between the elders, healers, and musicians to help preserve the indigenous knowledge of their culture as Rapé medicine. As a Rapé blend however, it acts a lot more suttle and can be used to access the overall energies of the plant teacher from a different perspective. Still, it is believed to open the pathways for deeper dreaming and lucid experiences, enhancing the receiver’s connection to the natural world and spiritual realms when used correctly with dedication and prayer.
It has been observed in people who work with this Rapé in the ceremony of Ayahuasca medicine, to bring great cleansing and harmonious growth of the auric field.
Designed to work deeply on the heart chakra and third eye chakra, Rapé Jurema Preta fosters energetic alignment and spiritual clarity. Its powerful properties assist in opening pathways for mediumistic development, helping users connect with higher dimensions and expand their awareness.
Jurema Preta is used by shamans as one of the plants of most spiritual power and they take the Rapé in preparation before rituals to help in clairvoyance, connection to the spiritual realms and cleansing of an overloaded mind. It is used by spiritual leaders to help them on their spiritual journey and in obtaining ancestral wisdom. The indigenous of Brazil use it to invoke the enchanted beings of the forest.
Jurema Preta Rapezito is prepared with Jurema Preta ashes treated by our alchemist Txai Matheus.
Considered a sacred tree, Jurema was used by the Mayans as a cure for skin diseases, as a cell regenerator and for the treatment of injuries. It was popularly known as “the tree whose shell is made into powder that heals wounds.” They used tepezcohuite by applying the powder of its bark on wounds and especially burns, to calm the pain and greatly accelerate their healing, even preventing the appearance of scars.
But not only in the times of the Mayans, for centuries, both powdered bark and aqueous extracts of Jurema, have played a vital role in folk medicine. Healers use them to treat burns, ulcers, and wounds with exceptional results.
More recently, Mimosa tenuiflora bark has delivered groundbreaking results in treating burns and skin injuries to treat hundreds of injured people suffering from severe skin burns caused by an unfortunate gas explosion in 1982 and a 1985 earthquake. In both cases, it was used massively with very satisfactory results in the reconstruction of the epidermis as well as in repigmentation.
Studies reveal that Mimosa tenuiflora’s healing properties come from a combination of bioactive compounds, including tannins, triterpenoid saponins, steroid saponins, polyphenols, phytosterols, lipids and alkaloids. Pharmacological research highlights its antimicrobial, antiseptic, antifungal, analgesic, bronchial dilating, regenerative, cicatrizing, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging effects. It was also able to cure headaches identified in cases of respiratory problems. This scientific validation underscores the powerful traditional medicine of black Jurema.
Like mentioned above in Mexico it is also known as the “skin tree”, as its bark has important cell-renewing properties. This name also applies to the plant extract, typically derived from the bark which is widely used and commercialized for its medical and cosmetic benefits that supports regeneration.
Products from this tree are particularly useful for skin care, especially in the case of wrinkles, cold sores, acne, scars, eczema, burns, stretch marks, cellulite or cuts. Bark powder contains 16% tannins, which have an astringent effect, stopping bleeding and helping to protect the skin from infection while new protective tissue is formed.
In spiritual practice, Jurema Preta can be used in purification baths, to smoke environments, to consecrate ritual objects and in the preparation of teas or tinctures for protection, healing, expanding consciousness and connecting with ancestors.
In shamanism, Jurema Preta can be used in rituals to contact the spiritual plane to seek visions or revelations, to cure physical and spiritual illnesses, to protect against negative energies and to connect with nature and the elements of the earth.
