Jurema has the ability to make profound changes in our life. Its spirit allows for ancient rooted wisdom discoveries which are based on integrity that aligns with deep knowledge about expanded states of consciousness. 
 
The spirit of the Jurema Preta inhabits a plant that is known among various indigenous tribes to perform powerful ceremonies. It is housed by a shrubby or perennial tree belonging to the Fabaceae family of the Fabales order, typical of the caatinga. It is found in El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Colombia, and Venezuela reaching all the way into the northeastern Brazil. Hence it thrives in tropical deciduous forests as an opportunist, a pioneer plant and a resilient survivor that propagates easily, especially from seeds.
 
It is a deciduous species that flowers and bears fruit in the relatively driest period of the year, when it has no foliage. One of the trademarks is its beautiful flowers that flutter like white feathers in the wind which can create a real spectacle for the visual senses.
 
Other common names are Jurema Preta, Jurema Negra, Ajucá and Espineiro in the Portuguese language. 
 
It is widely used in Toré, a shamanistic practice of the Kariri Xocó ethnic group where it is a symbol of spiritual initiation.
 
The Fulni-ô tribe, hailing from the Pernambuco region in northeastern Brazil, holds a prominent place as the guardians of this medicine. They are especially known for their knowledge of the sacred Jurema plant in their culture. They often associated it with lucid dreaming, visionary states and spiritual exploration.
 
Similar to them, the Katukina consider Jurema good for opening vision, working with the 3rd eye, increasing lucid dreaming as well and supporting astral projection during sleep while using it as a visionary drink.
 
Besides Jurema being the name of the “spirit inside” the divine tree being it's also the name of an indigenous cabocla, the daughter of Tupinambá, who both were very strong and striking. Jurema can moreover be found as an indigenous type village in the spirit realm that holds a place for souls after their passing over from the physical plane of existence.

Considered a sacred tree, Jurema was used by the Mayans as a cure for skin diseases, as a cell regenerator and for the treatment of injuries. It was popularly known as “the tree whose shell is made into powder that heals wounds.” They used tepezcohuite by applying the powder of its bark on wounds and especially burns, to calm the pain and greatly accelerate their healing, even preventing the appearance of scars.
 
Studies reveal that Mimosa tenuiflora’s healing properties come from a combination of bioactive compounds, including tannins, triterpenoid saponins, steroid saponins, polyphenols, phytosterols, lipids and alkaloids. Pharmacological research highlights its antimicrobial, antiseptic, antifungal, analgesic, bronchial dilating, regenerative, cicatrizing, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging effects. It was also able to cure headaches identified in cases of respiratory problems. This scientific validation underscores the powerful traditional medicine of black Jurema.
